Chapter 40

Crowe called Tracey from the taxi en route to Newark International. She sounded tired. The crime scene from yesterday’s triple homicide in Times Square had spawned a mass of physical evidence. She’d been in the lab till past midnight processing the most critical elements. After only four hours of sleep, she’d returned to work early this morning, hoping to wrap sometime tonight.

He brought her up to date on the Seth Greer case and explained why he was going to Bangkok. She was disappointed they’d had so little time to hang out together before he had to leave. He promised to give her a call when he got back in two or three days, he wasn’t really sure how long he’d be in Bangkok. She told him to be careful, to stay out of tough neighborhoods and stick with bottled water.

Feeling vaguely unsettled, he stared out at Jersey City’s industrial sector as the taxi raced along the Pulaski Skyway.

His United flight was scheduled to depart at 8:30. After clearing security he wandered around Terminal C, looking for something to eat, until he found an Asian outlet called Wok & Roll, where he had a spring roll and a miso soup.

He called Levinson and told him he was going to Bangkok and would check in when he returned. As for War Horse, just see Blaikie’s secretary to pick up the tickets for the Saturday he’d wanted.

The flight departed on time, and Crowe settled in for the 14-hour haul to New Delhi, grateful for a window seat and no one sitting next to him. He had The Ramayana to read, music on his phone, and the Riverside Rapist to think about. He popped two homeopathic pills for jet lag and drank some water. Dinner came around and he ate most of a pasta dish. He skipped coffee and drank more water.

Nothing in the movie listings piqued his interest. After a few pages of The Ramayana, he set it aside. Rama’s epic battle to rescue his wife Sita from Ravana’s abduction was gripping, but Crowe already knew the ending. It paled in comparison to the mystery on his mind.

He reviewed his notes from the Riverside Rapist case, still puzzled by the timing of the killings. If only he could make sense of that, it would be the first step in developing a killer profile. He listed the dates of the killings, and the span of time between subsequent murders.

Murder 1: September 4, 2000.

Murder 2: August 15, 2002 – 23.5 months later.

Murder 3: July 26, 2004 – 23.5 months later.

Murder 4: July 7, 2006 – 23.5 months later.

Murder 5: June 15, 2008 – 23.5 months later.

Murders 6 and 7: December 14 and 15, 2009 – 18 months later.

Murder 8: October 28, 2011 – 22.5 months since the previous two.

The average time between consecutive murders was roughly 22.5 months. Crowe and Levinson had already discussed this periodicity, and they’d ruled out conventions and religious holidays. What else could possibly dictate a two-year schedule?

Medical check-ups? Crowe thought of his father.
